My Father Dr. Samir Sarhan was born in 8th of December , 1941 in
Cairo, specifically in Bab el Khalek .
In 1961 he was graduated from faculty of Arts Cairo university, he
got his PhD from Indiana University in 1968, in English literature,
before taking a position at Cairo University where he taught English
literature and headed the English Language department from 1979 to
1980.
After that he worked as Dean of theater art institute from 1980 to
1982, then he moved to culture centers from 1983 to 1985.
Later, he lectured
at King Abdel Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
In 1992 Dr. Samir Sarhan became head of the General Egyptian Book
Organization, state-run body which is responsible for publishing
government subsided books.
During his nearly 12 tenure he also organized Cairo's International
Book Fair, the largest in the Middle East.
Dr. Samir Sarhan was also a regular writer in several Egyptian
newspapers
Only a few days before he passed away, Dr. Samir Sarhan was awarded
the prestigious annual State Merit Award for a life time of
achievements in the arts.
The place that my dad was born affected his personality , he says
that he was born in Bab El Khalk the ancient place, specifically in
Hassan El Akbar street facing the Egyptian Book House , and with
this place he started his first pleasure with reading
